A revised school curriculum for Wales was announced by Jane Hutt, Education Minister today [9 October 2007]. New School Curriculum for Wales
A revised school curriculum for Wales to develop pupils’ skills levels, knowledge and understanding was announced by Jane Hutt, Education Minister today [9 October 2007].
The revised curriculum for the 3-19 age range will be implemented from September 2008 and has been created following an extensive consultation exercise.
The revised curriculum focuses on six main areas of change.
For 3-7 year olds, practitioners overwhelmingly supported the philosophy and aims of the Foundation Phase in implementing a curriculum that focuses on the development of children’s skills. To support the rollout of the Foundation Phase, a Framework for Children’s Learning will be produced for distribution in January 2008, and implemented for 3-5 year olds from September 2008, and 6-7 year olds in following years.
National Curriculum Subjects
For pupils from the age of seven, the requirements in respect of the 12 National Curriculum subjects have been restructured. The purpose of these changes is to identify the skills for each subject and the range of contexts, opportunities and activities through which these skills should be developed and applied. Content has been updated to ensure relevance to the 21st century and manageability for learners and teachers.
These revisions will promote bilingualism and embrace the ’Curriculum Cymreig’ - a curriculum that is set in the Welsh context and deals with matters and issues relevant to Wales while ensuring wider international perspectives.
The revised curriculum also provides frameworks for three specific areas.
Personal and Social Education
For Personal and Social Education, the revision offers a simpler structure whilst retaining valued elements of the current framework. The learning outcomes in the framework cover 7-19 year-olds and offer a wide-ranging and valuable learning agenda. A full range of important personal and social issues are covered including diverse areas as personal relationships, diet and health, money management, sustainable living, first aid and active citizenship.
Careers and the World of Work
For Careers and the World of Work, at the request of many practitioners the two current frameworks have been replaced with one and the framework extended to cover learners between the ages of 11 and 19.
Religious Education
For Religious Education, a model framework has been produced which Local Authorities in partnership with their Agreed Syllabus Conferences can adopt as a basis for their locally agreed syllabuses. It will promote consistency in the teaching and assessment of Religious Education across schools in Wales and enhance the moral and spiritual dimensions of the curriculum.
Skills Framework
A focus on skills development underpins the whole curriculum and to reinforce this, a non-statutory skills framework has been developed. This framework describes progression from 3 to 19 in developing thinking, communication, ICT and number skills - skills that are fundamental for learners to become successful individuals.
Notes
A detailed consultation on the school curriculum was held between January and March this year. Over 5,500 questionnaire returns were received and 25 consultation events held.

Cwricwlwm Ysgol Newydd i Gymru Heddiw [9 Hydref 2007], cyhoeddodd Jane Hutt, y Gweinidog dros Addysg, y byddai cwricwlwm ysgol diwygiedig yn cael ei gyflwyno yng Nghymru er mwyn datblygu sgiliau, gwybodaeth a dealltwriaeth disgyblion.
Bydd y cwricwlwm diwygiedig ar gyfer yr ystod oedran 3-19 yn cael ei roi ar waith o fis Medi 2008 ymlaen ac ymgynghorwyd yn eang cyn mynd ati i’w baratoi.
Mae chwe phrif newid i’r cwricwlwm diwygiedig.
Yn achos plant 3-7 mlwydd oed, roedd mwyafrif llethol yr ymarferwyr o blaid athroniaeth a nodau’r Cyfnod Sylfaen, sef cynnig cwricwlwm sy’n canolbwyntio ar ddatblygu sgiliau plant. Er mwyn cynorthwyo i gyflwyno’r Cyfnod Sylfaen, bydd Fframwaith ar gyfer Dysgu Plant yn cael ei baratoi ac yna ei ddosbarthu ym mis Ionawr 2008. Bydd yn cael ei weithredu ar gyfer plant 3-5 mlwydd oed o fis Medi 2008 ymlaen, ac ar gyfer plant 6-7 mlwydd oed yn ystod y blynyddoedd wedyn.
Pynciau’r Cwricwlwm Cenedlaethol
Yn achos disgyblion o saith mlwydd oed ymlaen, mae’r gofynion o ran y 12 o bynciau sydd yn y Cwricwlwm Cenedlaethol wedi eu hailstrwythuro. Diben y newidiadau hyn yw nodi’r sgiliau ar gyfer pob pwnc, yn ogystal ag ystod y cyd-destunau, y cyfleoedd a’r gweithgareddau a fydd yn datblygu’r sgiliau hynny ac yn eu rhoi ar waith. Mae’r cynnwys wedi ei ddiweddaru hefyd er mwyn sicrhau ei fod yn berthnasol i’r unfed ganrif ar hugain ac er mwyn gwneud yn siwr bod dysgwyr ac athrawon yn gallu ymdopi ag ef.
Bydd y newidiadau hyn yn hyrwyddo dwyieithrwydd ac yn cwmpasu’r ’Cwricwlwm Cymreig’ - cwricwlwm sydd wedi ei osod yng nghyd-destun Cymru ac sy’n ymdrin â materion sy’n berthnasol i Gymru, gan sicrhau persbectif rhyngwladol ehangach ar yr un pryd.
Mae’r cwricwlwm diwygiedig hefyd yn darparu fframweithiau ar gyfer tri maes penodol.
Addysg Bersonol a Chymdeithasol
Yn achos Addysg Bersonol a Chymdeithasol, mae’ newidiadau’n cynnig strwythur symlach tra’ cadw’relfennau hynny o’ fframwaith presennol y rhoddir gwerth arnynt. Mae’r canlyniadau dysgu yn y fframwaith yn cwmpasu disgyblion o 7 i 19 mlwydd oed ac yn cynnig agenda ddysgu gwerthfawr ac eang ei gorwelion. Ymdrinnir ag ystod eang o faterion personol a chymdeithasol pwysig, gan gynnwys meysydd mor wahanol â pherthynas bersonol pobl â?i gilydd, deiet ac iechyd, rheoli arian, byw mewn ffordd gynaliadwy, cymorth cyntaf a dinasyddiaeth weithredol.
Gyrfaoedd a Byd Gwaith
Yn achos Gyrfaoedd a Byd Gwaith, ar gais llawer o ymarferwyr, mae un fframwaith wedi ei gyflwyno yn lle’r ddau bresennol, ac mae’r fframwaith hwnnw wedi ei estyn i gynnwys dysgwyr rhwng 11 a 19 mlwydd oed.
Addysg Grefyddol
Mae fframwaith enghreifftiol wedi ei baratoi ar gyfer Addysg Grefyddol, a gall yr Awdurdodau Lleol, mewn partneriaeth â’u Cynadleddau ar y Maes Llafur Cytûn, ei fabwysiadu yn sail i’r meysydd llafur y cytunir arnynt yn lleol. Bydd yn fodd i hyrwyddo cysondeb wrth addysgu ac asesu Addysg Grefyddol ar draws ysgolion Cymru a bydd yn gwella’r agweddau moesol ac ysbrydol ar y cwricwlwm.
Y Fframwaith Sgiliau
Mae’r cwricwlwm yn ei gyfanrwydd yn seiliedig ar ganolbwyntio ar ddatblygu sgiliau, ac er mwyn ategu hyn, datblygwyd fframwaith sgiliau anstatudol. Mae’r fframwaith hwn yn amlinellu datblygiad disgyblion rhwng 3 a 19 mlwydd oed o ran datblygu eu gallu i feddwl ac i gyfathrebu, eu sgiliau TGCh a’u sgiliau rhifedd - sgiliau sy’n gwbl hanfodol os yw dysgwyr am lwyddo.
