Media briefing: NUT strike ballot
08 September 2008
Philip Parkin, General Secretary of Voice: the union for education professionals, said: "While we respect the right of other unions to go on strike, Voice believes that industrial action is a negative force that damages children’s education and the public perception of teachers as professionals. Voice believes in the force of argument rather than the argument of force.
"I don’t think that there’s a general appetite for strike action. Only one in 10 of teachers – a minority of NUT members – voted for the last strike, which wasn’t not supported by the other teachers’ unions.
"The NUT going on strike will not achieve anything and will be counter-productive. Negotiation – not strike action – is the way forward."
