Information guides
New information guides are now available to help young people, teachers and all those working within secondary education to understand the new choices and opportunities available to 14-19 year olds.
The changes will include the introduction of the new Diploma, better careers advice, improvements to GCSEs and A-Levels and the expansion of Apprenticeships.
To help explain these changes the Department for Children Schools and Families (DCSF), has developed a range of new information leaflets and publications, including:
- Moving Up – This publication has been produced for Year 7 students and will be sent out to all secondary schools in September. It explains the options that will be made available to them when they move on up to secondary school. It contains interviews with young people who have made the move up and describes what decisions they’ll have to make in each year (reference: 00520-2008MAG)
- Which way now? 2008/09 - This publication is aimed at Year 9 students. It provides information for pupils to assist with their subject choices and qualifications in Year 10 and 11 (ISBN: 0-86110-926-0)
- It’s Your Choice 2008/09 - This publication is aimed at Year 10 and 11 students. It provides information about the options available to them, helping them make decisions relating to their post-16 phase of learning (ISBN: 0-86110-922-8)
- Parents & Carers: Guide to options 14-19 - 2008-09 - This publication is aimed at the parents and carers of Year 9 pupils. It provides information to enable them to support their teenagers through the career and learning choices they face from Year 9 onwards (ISBN: 0-86110-928-7)
- The Diploma, Bringing Learning to Life, A Guide for Parents - This leaflet gives general details and overview information about the Diploma to parents and carers so they can guide and advise the young people under their care (reference DCSF-00498-2008)
- The Diploma: A Guide for Schools - This leaflet is aimed at teachers, careers advisers and Connexions advisers and provides general details and overview information about the Diploma (reference 00499-2008LEF-EN)
- The Diploma: A Guide for FE - This leaflet is aimed at lecturers and people working in further education colleges and provides general details and overview information about the Diploma (reference 00500-2008LEF-EN)
- Languages in Key Stage 4: Ten Questions and Answers for School Leaders - This CD-Rom offers an explanation of the new framework for languages learning and guidance on the implications for the curriculum, for assessment and teacher support (reference DCSF-00669-2007)
- Talking prospects? Why taking a language at Key Stage 4 can be good you’re your child’s future – This leaflet is aimed at parents and carers and provides details on the benefits of learning additional languages (reference DCSF-00885-2007)
- Online 14-19 Prospectus - These show all the courses and qualifications available at school, colleges and sixth forms in your area. Teachers and students can search for their local area prospectus by postcode.
