White Paper full of contradictions

Voice has commented on The Importance of Teaching Education White Paper published today (24 November 2010).

General Secretary Philip Parkin said: "The Department for Education seems to be driven by competing and conflicting ideologies centralise with inflexible targets yet undermine national pay and conditions for school staff; raise teaching standards but propose the employment of unqualified teachers in free schools; promote a traditional national curriculum but exempt its favourite type of school (academies) from following it; allow teachers freedom to teach but tell them how to do it not so much a mass of contradictions but a mess of contradictions."

There's a great deal - quite rightly - about high standards of teaching but there seems to be a failure to acknowledge that high academic ability is not necessarily directly proportional to ability to communicate. High academic standards are essential for teachers at A level, when students may well be sufficiently motivated and able to study to learn DESPITE their teachers, but not necessarily so at KS1-4. Is there any analysis that indicates that teaching standards correlate to teachers' university qualifications?

Funny isn't it how teaching standards are not supposed to be good enough and yet the government now expects those same teachers to train new ones!

In reality, perhaps it will be the 'best' teachers in a school who are given the training roles. It naturally follows that those teachers will therefore be in thier own classrooms less. I fail to see how taking good teachers away from the students and giving them other jobs to do is a good idea. Incidentally, increasing their pension contributions duing a pay freeze is hardly likely to enthuse them with a willingness to take on extra work.
