The Burgundy Book sets out the terms and conditions of employment for teachers working in Maintained Schools. It may also apply in Academies and Free Schools. It does not apply to teachers working in the independent sector.
The Burgundy Book is a nationally agreed set of employment rights for teachers and establishes such things as sickness entitlement, resignation dates and notice periods.
Please note – The Burgundy Book was published in August 2000, and statutory provision (EG maternity rights) have improved on some of the terms.
The Green Book sets out the terms and conditions of employment for Local Authority Employed Staff, in schools this is likely to refer to support staff, such as Classroom Assistants, Office Staff and those working in other support roles. It may also apply to support staff working in Academies and Free Schools.
It is a set of conditions negotiated nationally and is regularly revised and updated. The current version was agreed in 2016.
