Voice Official Response: Additional National Professional Learning INSET days 2019 to 2022
Backgound: The Welsh Government consulted on the amendment of regulations which would allow schools to close to pupils for an additional day per year for 3 years. The proposed changes will:
- provide additional INSET days for schools;
- increase the time available for teachers to undertake professional learning; and
- support the introduction of the new curriculum.
Summary: We believe that it is critical that INSET days should include both teaching and support staff, and that support staff are paid to attend INSET days. This may pose practical difficulties in schools where many support staff work part-time but those difficulties are not insurmountable provided that funding is available.
The Welsh Government should also consider, in conjunction with the consortia and local authorities, providing specialised training on the new curriculum to educational psychologists, speech therapists and other professionals who may not be based in schools but for whom it would be valuable to understand the new curriculum in order to best support learners’ progress and well-being.
It is important that dedicated curriculum INSET days are consistent and of a high quality across Wales. This will necessitate joined-up working from the Welsh Government, consortia and local authorities.
