Voice Official Response:Strengthening Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) and Improving Career Progression for Teachers
Background: This consultation is "about supporting teachers and ensuring the right structures are in place at the beginning of a teacher’s career, improving access to high-quality professional development and improving progression opportunities for all teachers throughout their careers". The first half of the consultation sets out initial proposals for a strengthened Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). The second half of the consultation sets out thinking on to support career development for teachers once they have gained QTS.
Summary: Voice's comments included:
- The induction period should be extended to two years.
- There needs to be consistency in expectation and provision of mentoring.
- A national CPD framework should be developed for early career teachers.
- Relevant sabbaticals should be made available to teachers.
